Chapter Sixteen

I creep up towards the door, still in a half-crouched position as Luk follows close behind, his bow in his hand and an arrow on the string. Just as we step foot on the sidewalk, the door opens and both Luk and I stumble backwards. I trip and fall onto Luk as my foot misses the edge. Luk lets out a cry of pain when my elbow hits his wounded side. I look up at a man standing in the doorway and I raise my pistol as I roll off Luk.

“Don’t move!” I say forcefully as I get to my feet. “Don’t you fuckin’ move!”

I glance down at Luk holding his side and then back at the man standing a few feet away with his hands in the air. He's dressed in a brown pullover shirt and blue jeans that, although a bit ragged, are at least clean. His short brown hair is combed back and a thin beard, speckled with grey, covers his cheeks and chin. His blue eyes stare straight at me, the lines around them formed of time and weather plus a bit of sadness thrown in.

“I won’t hurt you,” he says.

“Who else is in there?” I ask as I move a little closer to Luk.

“No one, it’s just me.” He looks down at Luk. “Is he okay?”

“Don’t worry about him,” I say, somewhat nastily. “Get away from the door,” I say while waving my gun in the direction I want him to move.

He steps down off the sidewalk and moves out into the parking lot, his hands still in the air. I look down at Luk and crouch next to him, still pointing the gun at the man.

“Luk, are you okay?” I ask.

“I think so, but it hurts like hell,” he says as he starts to get to his feet, still holding his side.

I turn my attention back to our new friend. He takes a small step backwards, his eyes riveted on the barrel.

“It’s just me here, really. Take a look if you want,” he says.

I watch him for a moment and then I lower the pistol, although I keep my finger on the trigger.

“What’s your name?” I ask.

“Mason,” he says nervously.

“You can put your hands down. My name is Rayn, this is Luk.”

Mason slowly lowers his hands and lets out a deep breath. “Rayn and Luk. Are you sure he’s okay?”

I turn my head to look at Luk who's bent at the waist, a pained look on his face. I move to his side and help him stand.

“I think I need to sit down,” he says.

“No quick movements,” I say to Mason, giving him a look that says that I'm dead serious as I help Luk sit down on the edge of the sidewalk.

Mason stands a few feet from us, quiet and still. “If he’s hurt I might have something to help,” he says.

I glance at Luk and he nods and shrugs his shoulders.

“Okay, but so that you understand, if you go in there and come back out with a weapon, I’ll kill you.
